On May 12, 1876 the new Temple of Israel was dedicated. During the ensuing one hundred and twenty seven years, services have continued uninterruped and today the Temple of Israel stands as the oldest Jewish house of worship in the state of North Carolina.
The purpose of this congregation shall be to worship God in accordance with the faith of Judaism; to provide for its members and their children a love and understanding of our Jewish heritage; to support our Jewish brethren everywhere; and to apply the ethical teachings of Judaism to our relations with Society.
The exterior of the Temple was restored during the spring of 1982 and 2000. The colors used to restore the building, including the golden domes, were those of the original colors of paint. The front door is the original door.
The Temple has been approved by the Wilmington Historic Commission as an historic site.
